This grand lady is Colette; Colette of Collingwood to be precise.
She was born in Chile on the 1st of June 2000. As far as I can determine she lived there until she was about five years old, then was brought to the UK where she was registered.
Her pedigree gives her sire and dam as Chilean male and Chilean female. Nothing else.
She lives on our farm with two of her daughters, four of her grandsons and granddaughters, two great-granddaughters and now a great-great granddaughter! It’s a good job she likes babysitting isn’t it? She is often left with all of the cria when their mum’s are off grazing. She doesn’t mind though , she would just as soon doze in the sun than frolic with the youngsters, and the cria are safe to sleep by her.
She doesn’t get a full haircut when we shear them. I ask the shearer to leave some hair on so she doesn’t get cold in the winter coz her fleece doesn’t grow like that of younger animals. This year she kept her neck hair, belly and legs on. Next year we will leave her blanket, or back hair on.
If only they could talk! I bet she has some amazing stories to tell.
Colette will live the rest of her life with us, adventures over, peaceful in our lovely wildflower meadows.
